The end of a relationship can be emotionally difficult, especially where there are questions about finances, property or arrangements for children. With the right support, you can move forward with greater clarity and confidence.
You will receive calm, clear advice and practical guidance at every stage. Our experienced family lawyers will help you understand your choices, reduce uncertainty and make informed decisions about your future.
Civil partners have the same legal rights as married couples. If you decide to separate, the legal process is similar to divorce and covers a range of important issues.
These include arrangements for children, division of assets, property matters and financial support, as well as wider considerations such as inheritance tax, tenancy rights, social security and next of kin status. We will explain what applies to your situation in a straightforward and practical way.
Ending a civil partnership is known as dissolution and is based on the irretrievable breakdown of the relationship. You do not need to prove fault, but the partnership must have lasted at least 12 months before you can apply.
The process begins with an application to the court, either individually or jointly. The court will then notify the other partner and, after a minimum waiting period, issue a Conditional Order confirming there is no legal reason to prevent dissolution. A Final Order is granted after a further waiting period, formally ending the partnership.
If the dissolution is contested, this can only be done on limited legal grounds, such as jurisdiction issues or procedural errors. Alongside the legal process, you will also need to resolve financial matters and any arrangements for children.
Where possible, reaching agreement outside of court can help avoid unnecessary delay, cost and stress. We will support you in resolving financial arrangements and maintenance in a way that is fair and workable for your circumstances.
If mediation is appropriate, we will guide you through the process and can negotiate on your behalf to reach an agreement. If court proceedings are needed, you will receive clear advice and strong representation throughout.

The legal process takes a minimum of 26 weeks from application to final order. However, resolving finances can take longer depending on the assets involved and whether agreement can be reached.
Seeking early advice often helps to streamline the process and reduce stress.
