Biography

I am the Head of the award-winning and Top Tier Legal 500 Medical Negligence Team at Tees. I have been doing medical negligence work now for over two decades and have recovered £millions in compensation for victims of medical accidents.

I work with our dedicated team of specialist lawyers and experts to help you understand what happened; to help you access the best possible treatment and rehabilitation; to secure maximum compensation; and to help you to positively plan for the future.

I have extensive experience in all kinds of medical negligence cases, but more recently I have sub-specialised in cases involving:

  • Child birth injury, e.g. cerebral palsy, learning (neuro-cognitive) difficulties associated with extreme prematurity
  • Maternal birth injury such as incontinence after childbirth due to damage to the anal sphincter complex.
  • Adult brain injuries, particularly cases involving delays in diagnosing a brain tumour and strokes
  • Delayed diagnosis of sepsis
  • Amputation
  • Sight loss – I have received Visual Awareness Training from Support4Sight to enable me to best work to support those with sight loss.

My expertise, coupled with access to a network of leading medical professionals, enables me swiftly identify the case issues, to give straightforward realistic advice at the outset and to achieve the best possible outcomes for you.

Going above and beyond anticipating the need for assistance and support throughout the litigation progress,  I work with my colleagues to ensure that you receive access to financial advice and support, case management and rehabilitation services.

Further information

I love my work!  Being a medical negligence lawyer is more than a job – it’s a calling, driving me to make a positive and tangible difference in people’s lives.  Every case is a chance to make a meaningful impact – I am a voice for the vulnerable, I help clients to navigate complex legal and medical landscapes, I seek redress for individuals and I have the opportunity to drive positive change within the healthcare system.

I graduated from Magdalene College, Cambridge University and qualified as a solicitor in 2001 in a London firm, before moving to East Anglia.  I joined Tees in 2006.

Away from the office, I enjoy spending time with my husband and dogs (a Romanian rescue doggie (Boo), and a Cavachon x Jack Russel, Winnie).  My two children are now at University.  Throughout my life, I have always been involved in sports –  gymnastics, tennis, netball, obstacle races, running a few marathons or Korfball.

In 2023, I walked Hadrian’s Wall (with a broken toe!) and completed the National Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for the Tees Better Future Fund.

I am a Trustee of Support4Sight and of the charity, Action Against Medical Accidents.

Recent awards and accolades

I am on the AvMA specialist medical negligence panel and have been accredited as a Senior Litigator by APIL and an Accredited Clinical Negligence Specialist.

Many of my settled cases have been reported and I have written articles for numerous Medico-legal Journals.  I am also involved in several industry Steering and Advisory Groups and Peer Review articles for Clinical Risk.

I have spoken at two Regional NHS Conferences, a Regional Optometry and Ophthalmology Meeting, the Annual Congress of Ophthalmologists and at various AvMA Conferences.

I contributed to the APIL Textbook on clinical negligence claims, which was published in 2018, and I have co-authored a book on Complaints, Litigation, and Clinical Errors, which will be published in May 2024.

“Janine Collier inspired confidence and put us at ease. Janine always showed great empathy – and we always felt we weren’t treated simply as a case – but as individuals. She was in regular contact, by phone / email – even out of hours when required. She built a great team of experts for our case – and regularly questioned and challenged them. She also found us a good case manager, who found us experts who could really help us – and she negotiated an advance on our settlement to fund these.” Legal 500 UK, 2025

“Janine Collier is an extremely able and committed lawyer; apart from her skill as a litigator and negotiator, Janine is known for going the extra mile for her clients. Janine’s tenacity is evident from the excellent case outcomes she achieves even in the most complex of cases, she is unafraid to litigate if the right settlement cannot be achieved but her negotiating skills are such that she sees the benefits of settlement where the award is at an appropriate level as this provides certainty that does not follow litigation.” Legal 500 UK, 2025

“Janine Collier is exceptional for her detailed factual and legal analysis of claims, the high standard of her instructions, and her sensitive client management. Her energy is remarkable.” Legal 500 UK, 2025

“Janine Collier is an excellent solicitor and runs a very dedicated and efficient team.” Legal 500 UK, 2025
