Expert legal training for the next generation of agricultural solicitors

Specialist knowledge in the agricultural sector

The Tees Agricultural and Rural Law Academy was launched in February 2023 as part of Tees’ long-term commitment to the rural community. Delivered through monthly seminars at our Cambridge and Bishop’s Stortford offices, the Academy develops our multi-disciplinary agriculture team across private client, litigation, commercial and property law.

Our aim is simple: to be recognised as the leading agricultural firm in the Eastern Region and beyond. As an NFU panel member, with strong ties to the CLA and land agents, and a large rural client base, Tees already brings significant expertise to this specialist area of law.

Two years of practical, relevant training

The Academy runs over two years, combining training from Tees’ lawyers, including Agricultural Law Consultant Andrea Nicholls, with insight from external experts such as barristers, accountants and surveyors.

The syllabus is designed in consultation with lawyers who work daily on agricultural matters, ensuring each seminar is grounded in real cases and practical experience.

Year one topics include:

  • Introduction to the agricultural industry in the UK
  • How agricultural land is held
  • The structure of the farming business
  • Tax and the farming family
  • Farm cottages
  • Farm safety
  • Financial support for agriculture
  • Rural land, boundaries, shooting leases, rights of way
  • Development in the countryside
  • Valuing the farm for probate and litigation
  • Trespassers and straying animals – from livestock to travellers

Year two topics have included:

  • Interpreting farming partnership accounts
  • Mobile phone masts in rural settings
  • Renewable energy schemes
  • Updates on the Sustainable Farming Incentive Scheme
  • Historic buildings on the farm
  • Advanced inheritance tax planning for farming families

Beyond the classroom

Academy participants also gain practical insight with farm walks and site visits, including to the British Sugar factory at Bury St Edmunds.

Over 60 Tees lawyers have already taken part in the Academy, and we are looking forward to welcoming our third intake.

Tees as a multi disciplinary firm provides real in depth expertise with an ability to identify and deal with the exceptional alongside the everyday commercial issues that arise. It merits its reputation for its responsive and often innovative approach to problem solving
