The review has now assessed 93% of cases, with 47 cases classified as severe, including one fatal case.

What happened at Addenbrooke’s Hospital?
An initial review led by an independent expert found that several operations Dr Stohr performed on young patients fell significantly below acceptable medical standards. In some cases, this has resulted in a long-term impact on the quality of life of the children involved.
Following these findings, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust commissioned a much wider external clinical review, initially examining more than 700 planned surgical cases.
The review had primarily focused on paediatric orthopaedic surgery, with particular emphasis on complex hip procedures and osteotomies. An osteotomy involves cutting and realigning a bone to correct its position and may be used to address bone deformities, relieve pain caused by arthritis or joint misalignment, and improve function and movement.
The review was expanded
As of April 2026, the scope of the investigation was expanded to include additional patients who underwent emergency orthopaedic procedures, rather than focusing solely on planned surgery.
This was a significant development, as it meant concerns were not limited to elective procedures and may have also affected patients who underwent trauma or urgent orthopadic surgery.
