Dr Olanrewaju Emmanuel Atiba: Legal help for those affected by Lister Hospital Obstetrician’s practice

In April 2025 the General Medical Council (GMC) decided to place undertakings on Dr Atiba, an obstetrician at the Lister Hospital, Stevenage due to concerns about his fitness to practice over a prolonged period of time. Our specialist medical negligence lawyers are already supporting families affected by this situation.

Treatment by Dr Atiba at the Lister Hospital

The GMC have found that:

“There was evidence of deficiencies in Dr Atiba’s clinical care, particularly in his decisions of when to use rotational forceps as opposed to performing a caesarean section. Concerns with the quality of his record keeping in complex cases and with the consent process have been highlighted. His lack of discussions about difficult clinical decision-making with more senior colleagues has been criticised.”

The GMC also found that:

“These are not isolated incidents, with a pattern of events over a protracted period. In reaching this conclusion, we took into account the views of an expert and the findings of local and national investigations into a number of cases”.

As Dr Atiba had acknowledged specific areas where his standard of care was questioned; had demonstrated insight into these concerns; had shown a proactive and cooperative approach in addressing the concerns raised about his medical practice; and had fully complied with all interim conditions and local restrictions in place the GMC decided that the concerns about Dr Atiba’s fitness to practise could be addressed by him accepting an agreed set of undertakings.

The sanction details are publicly available on the GMC website.
