John Southan

Senior Associate, Commercial Property

John Southan, later life planning, will making specialist in Brentwood

How can I help you?

I am a property and private client specialist. I act in property work that overlaps with private client matters. I assist my colleagues across our 6 offices with non-transactional property work arising from their estates and trusts, such as assents, assignments, declarations and transfers. I assist my commercial property and residential conveyancing colleagues in interpreting existing trusts and analysing beneficial interests within their property transactions. I resolve title issues at the Land Registry, such as adverse possession, lost deeds, first registration and advice on charity property transactions. I advise co-owners on declarations of trust between them. I am a support lawyer for our Commercial Property department on these matters.

I have extensive experience in both property and private clients and qualified as a solicitor in 2006. I also qualified for a STEP Diploma in trusts and estates in 2016 Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. I have been at Tees since it merged with Wortley Byers in Brentwood and started at Wortley Byers in 2007. I am a Senior Associate in our Commercial Property Department, operating now from our Saffron Walden office, but on such property matters across the areas our 6 offices cover and beyond.

What else should you know

I started assisting with Private Client matters back in 2004, graduated as a solicitor in 2006 and have primarily dealt with Private Client matters since 2012. I worked for several years before that in commercial property until 2012 and in residential property until around 2016, giving me a broad base of experience.

Delivering what you really need

I support my clients, other property solicitors and private client solicitors at Tees in resolving or interpreting complex title issues and interpreting beneficial interests, as well as non-transactional property matters that involve trustees holding land or distributions to and from estates and trusts and transferring beneficial interests and declarations of trusts recording beneficial ownership between co-owners.

If there are transactional matters, those would usually be referred to a colleague within the commercial property or residential property departments instead so that I remain available to support other colleagues on their matters when they need assistance with such issues.

What else should you know?

Before working locally in Saffron Walden, I spent many years working in Brentwood and, before that, in Central London and Hornchurch. In between university, I spent one year studying international and comparative law while living in the Netherlands. I like to travel.
